Dark, dirty, polluted dumpsters and crime: is this what you visualize when you picture an urban alley? A group of motivated University of California, San Diego (UCSD) urban studies and planning students have been hard at work changing this stereotype with Project Alleyway 4.5 - which featured an evening of alleyway possibility.

On Thursday evening, June 3, these students inspired Hillcrest by showcasing how simple beautification and practical adornments such as lights, plants, and replacing pavement can make alleyways safer, more sustainable, and visually attractive for pedestrians.

Project Alleyway 4.5 highlighted the possibilities of Hillcrest's alleyways (in the alleyway running from Robinson Avenue to University Avenue between 4th Avenue and 5th Avenue). Project Alleyway 4.5 hosted a community celebration of re-imagined space. Thanks again to the Hillcrest food and drinks sponsors by Pasha's Mediterranean Grill, Sambuca Italian Bistro, Bite: Modern California Bistro and Wine Bar, and City Delicatessen. What will Hillcrest look like in ten years? Twenty years? Thirty Years? The City of San Diego's pending Neighborhood Plan Update process for Uptown will develop a plan for the next twenty to thirty years for the future of San Diego's uptown. As part of this process, the Hillcrest Business Association is organizing a series of workshops to develop the future of one of San Diego's most beloved neighborhoods. The workshops, titled Hillcrest 2.0, will occur quarterly over the next two years and will focus on a variety of subjects.

The 3rd Business Forum will take place on May 27, 2010 at the Ruby Room Kitchen (1271 University Avenue). This business forum will be on balancing density in Hillcrest. Join us for an evening of events and presentations on balancing density:

5:00 PM - Presentation from Urban Studies and Planning Students from UCSD. Join us for a research presentation from UCSD's Urban Studies and Planning students. They will be discussing: Highway Lids for Highway 163, Funding Public Art, Expansion of MAD in East Hillcrest

5:30 PM - Join us for an exciting and interactive group activity where participants essentially build Hillcrest! Each participant will be given a wooden block that represents either residential, commercial or mix-use building. The participant will place these blocks onto a large Hillcrest map to represent where they would like to see these developments. The end result will be a 3D visual of what Hillcrest would potentially look like in the next 20 years.

6:00 PM - Speaker Howard Blackson from Placemaker on Balancing Density in Hillcrest. Mr. Blackson is the Director of Planning at Placemakers in San Diego. The planning firm is dedicated to helping cities plan for growth and the future. He will offer his expertise and discuss Hillcrest's potentials.
